"Burn Baby"
My Interpretation:
Burn Baby, is one of the first pieces that I created that felt like it had a deeper meaning after analyzing and asking my now post-creative question, why did I make this? During the time I made this, I had just left college and moved out of my mother's house. Mind you with not a lot of support from most of my family about my decision. They each offered a hand after my leaving college, but also wanted me to go back. I knew that I couldn't accept their help, because their dreams for me weren't my own. So I had to watch the world that I once knew burn and even with the power to stop it I chose to allow that to ha, so that I could build something new from its ashes. Now I'm a full-time artist and have been hired for the very positions I sought after in college. But first I had to let it burn baby, burn.

"Attachment"
My Interpretation:
Attachment, speaks to me about my addiction that I have with my phone. How doom scrolling comforts me, but also doesn't allow me to escape from procrastination. Hugging me and feeding into my love language for quality time, making me laugh, and feel inspired to no end. A nod to that comfort is the hands wrapping around him and the sweater that he wears.  Just like our social media handles, the @ symbol represents how we wear our socials and are recognized by them. The third eye encircled by the halo is our consciousness restrained by our beliefs.

"Limelight"
My Interpretation:
Limelight, is an ode to being an artist. As the name suggests, it's what the spotlight for an artist can be like, the center of attention and judgement. It is both sweet and sour to have your work be perceived and depending on where someone stands that can change. As a creative, this is a lesson that I have experienced myself and have seen so many others experience without any regard for their humanity or life experiences. It's the age-old question of separating the art from the artist even if their art is screaming for help do we intervene or join in on their judgement. Depending on where I stand that changes for me, but regardless that spotlight is bittersweet.

"Create The Movement"
My Interpretation:
Create the Movement, is another piece that I have about being an artist, but within the political and social justice sphere. During the time that I created this piece it was 2020 while the pandemic was in full effect and the BLM movement had ramped up because of the untimely passing of George Floyd. This movement was a call to all artist to create and bring more awareness to this injustice. Being an artist is being a catalyst and a documenter of the present that we live in, which is at times glamorized and demanded by the public to help speak out. I was contacted many times about creating around this movement and when I did this is what I produced. A piece speaking more towards being an artist and having our work be consumed and used for other people's social proof today rather than the movement, all for the sake of change that is glamorized in the media and used for click-bait, represented by the earing on the right ear. This feeling of being uplifted, especially after having no attention on our work, because people are connecting with your art due to the times that are lived in. Otherwise, your art is only important while it is still relevant to the times, not because of your artistry as a whole. This piece felt like my protest against how we consume art today.

"Larger Than Life"
My Interpretation:
Larger than life, is my ode to being materialistic in a world that is dying. In the shadow of the tree, there is life. There is no life without our trees. No matter how we feel about the newest Jordans or the most relevant new product by a brand, that cares more about their profit margins than the margin of error that we passed to turn global warming around. The Jordans are way bigger than the tree because of how much more important it is than taking care of nature. This isn't just a protest piece though it is also a nod to the Jordan 1s being the biggest shoe to release, especially for black people. Michael Jordan made a major step for black people with this shoe and also created an entire new sub-culture for hip-hop. One shoe is filled while the other isn't because these are some big shoes to fill but there is even more work for us as black people to do to change our narrative and be respected plus represented in the world.

"Substance Abuse"
My Interpretation:
Substance Abuse, is another one of my first pieces that I interpreted to be a response to wanting to lessen my drinking habits. After leaving college I was drinking more often and outside at parties with more free time and less responsibility than I've had before. I used it as a way to have fun and help cope with the fear that I had for my future. It made me happy to feel lighter and free of anxiety, but also harmed my ability to move forward. This piece is a reminder to myself, about that time and to know that I must stay conscious and aware of my goals and who I want to become. This is also my lesson to anyone else who feels they are abusing substances or activities to cope even though they want to take a step toward a new version of themselves. I made this as a reminder that it's possible.

"She Wears The Pants"
My Interpretation:
She wears the pants, is a piece that I interpreted as my love for black women. There are so many details about this piece that make me feel the power that I believe black women hold in my life. Coming from a matriarch, where my mother and grandmother had the final say in the decisions that my family made I feel this is my piece for them. She has the world in her hands because our fate is in her hands at all times. I thought it was cute but she wears her big boy pants to show how much power she has commanding any room with her presence and outfit. Her shoes are untied but she looks confident and forward because she knows there is nothing to trip about in her path. On the front of her shirt, it looks like Evil but that is because black women can be perceived as the villain instead of reading it flipped as "Live" or even replacing the i with o as "Love". Then at every black women's fingertips is magic, power, resilience, and beauty.
